Travelling to Vancouver

Flying into Vancouver - Vancouver International Airport (YVR )

Flying into Vancouver International Airport (YVR) from abroad offers a seamless and efficient entry experience. Located about 12 kilometers south of downtown Vancouver, YVR is Canada's second-busiest airport and a major hub for international travel.

Arrival Process

Customs and Immigration: Upon landing, international travelers proceed to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) checkpoints. Be prepared with your passport and a completed declaration form (using the electronic stations available)

Baggage Claim: After clearing customs, retrieve your luggage from the designated carousel. Free luggage carts are available.

YVR Transportation Options

YVR is well-connected to downtown Vancouver and surrounding areas:

  • Canada Line SkyTrain: A fast, convenient light rail system connects YVR to downtown Vancouver in about 25 minutes. Trains depart every 6-12 minutes from the airport station, accessible directly from the International Terminal.

  • Taxis: Licensed taxis are available outside the arrivals area, with flat rates to downtown Vancouver (CAD$35-40)

  • Ride-Sharing Services: Uber and Lyft operate from designated pickup zones.

  • Car Rentals: Several rental companies have counters near the baggage claim area.

Using the Canada Line Skytrain (Our Recommended Mode of Transportation)

To use the Canada Line from Vancouver International Airport (YVR), follow the signs to the Canada Line station, located within the airport terminal. Purchase a ticket from a vending machine or use a Compass Card for a faster, reloadable option. The Canada Line connects YVR to downtown Vancouver, with stations such as Bridgeport and Richmond-Brighouse. Trains run every 6-10 minutes, and the trip to downtown takes around 25 minutes.

*Be sure to check the destination on the train to ensure you're traveling in the right direction. The fare depends on your destination within the zone system.

Weather. What to Expect in Late January

At the end of January, Vancouver typically experiences cool and damp weather. Temperatures usually range from 3°C to 8°C (37°F to 46°F), with occasional mild days. Rain is common, so expect frequent showers and overcast skies. Snowfall is rare in the city but possible, especially in higher elevations. Dress in layers and bring waterproof clothing to stay comfortable. While it’s generally cloudy, there are occasional sunny breaks, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and ocean.
